今回も再帰代名詞について綴ります。
テキストに出てきた文章で、それぞれどう意味が違ってくるでしょうか。
(1) My wife was talking to her.
My wife was talking to herself.
(2) She got dressed quickly and went to work.
She's growing up fast. She can now get herself dressed.
(3) I burned my finger badly.
I burned myself badly.
(4) I spoke to the senator.
I spoke to the senator himself.
I spoke to the senator myself.
(5) They hurt themselves playing basketball.
They hurt each other fencing.
(6) Look, Mommy, I painted it all by myself.
I choose to live by myself.

(1) My wife was talking to her.
(私の妻は彼女に話しかけていた。）
My wife was talking to herself.
（私の妻は独り言を言っていた。）
ぶつぶつ独り言を言っている感じでかなりクレイジー！
(2) She got dressed quickly and went to work.
（彼女はさっと服を着て仕事に行った。）
She's growing up fast. She can now get herself dressed.
（彼女は早く成長した。彼女は自分で着替えることができる。）
子どもの成長は早く、一人で着替えられるようになったことを言っている。
(3) I burned my finger badly.
（私は自分の指を大やけどした。）.......accident
I burned myself badly.
(私は大やけどした。）......careless
(4) I spoke to the senator.
(私は上院議員に話しかけた。）
I spoke to the senator himself.
（私は上院議員本人に話しかけた。）
上院議員は忙しく、なかなか本人に話せる機会はない。
大抵秘書を通じて話すことになるが、この文章では議員に直接話したことを意味する。
I spoke to the senator myself.
（私は自分で上院議員に話しかけた。）
(5) They hurt themselves playing basketball.
（彼らはバスケットボールをしているときにけがをした。）
けがに関する詳細は不明。
（それぞれ自分でけがしたのか、他人にやられたのか等読み取れない）
They hurt each other fencing.
（彼らはフェンシングでお互いを傷つけあった。）
(6) Look, Mommy, I painted it all by myself.
（見てママ、私全部自分でそれを塗ったよ。）=without help
I choose to live by myself.
（私は独りで住むことを選んだ。）=all alone
少しの違いでも大きく意味が変わるので、奥深いなあとしみじみしてます。
